David began painting in his late teens, when an entry in the Warana Festival fence-painting competition sparked a lifelong practice. Fascinated by art and design, he brings an architect's eye for structure and light to the canvas — a care that has guided his painting for decades.

He sketches in charcoal and paints in acrylic, often with eclectic music close by, trying to catch how places, people and small moments feel as much as how they look. Travel gives him many of his landscapes; family and dogs give him his most personal subjects — painted, as he puts it, into permanence.

He now paints weekly with a group at the Brisbane Institute of Art, has exhibited there on a number of occasions, and in 2025 was shortlisted for the Hall & Wilcox Prize.
